‘Respect’ is a tricky concept to grasp; it refers to not only how you feel and act towards others, but also yourself. Therefore, if you are ‘disrespectful’ it can be damaging to how you are seen and treated by others, as well as how you view yourself.
The RESPECT drama workshop is a one-hour interactive session designed to help pupils understand the importance of respectful relationships and how positive communication can prevent bullying and unkind behaviour in school. Pupils begin by exploring the meaning of respect through group discussion and engaging warm-up games that highlight good and poor listening skills. Using a Bunraku puppets, the class collaboratively creates a character who feels disrespected, which leads into role-play scenarios where some pupils act as the character, others as those showing disrespect, and the rest as advice-givers. This helps students develop empathy and practice peer mediation techniques.
The workshop also addresses how to handle disagreements and conflict respectfully, encouraging pupils to find constructive solutions through role-play and group discussion. To reinforce learning creatively, pupils perform a poem about respect using tableaux and actions. The session concludes with a reflection activity where pupils choose practical ways they can “choose respect” in their own lives and share these ideas with the group.
Throughout the workshop, pupils build skills in communication, self-awareness, and conflict resolution, leaving confident in their ability to show respect, manage conflict, and contribute positively to their school community. The session incorporates drama techniques such as role-play, puppetry (Bunraku), and improvisation to actively engage pupils and make the learning experience memorable and empowering.
