Our Powerful Choices programme provides schools with a safe and creative opportunity to introduce sensitive issues with their students and is an excellent starting point for future conversations about choices and consequences. Pupils are encouraged to reflect upon and discuss key issues throughout, working together to explore the various choices Gabriel, the main protagonist, has to make. The assembly includes spoken word, brilliant character illustrations and voiceovers, making the piece fully immersive.
The Assembly
The Powerful Choices Assembly is a thought-provoking programme that addresses the realities of peer pressure, knife crime, and the importance of making safe and positive decisions. Told through the fictional story of Gabriel, an 11-year-old boy navigating challenging situations with friends and older peers, the assembly-style performance encourages children to reflect on the power of their own choices and how these can shape their future. Through spoken word, interactive discussion, and a “magical phone” concept that reveals potential outcomes, pupils explore key themes such as trusted adults, staying safe, and the impact of carrying or hiding weapons.
This 45-minute session aims to build pupils’ confidence in recognising risky situations and empower them to seek help from trusted adults or helplines when needed. By blending storytelling, drama, and live debate, Powerful Choices helps young people understand the legal and emotional consequences of knife crime, the dangers of joint enterprise, and how positive choices can protect not only themselves but also those around them. The programme equips pupils with practical strategies for resisting peer pressure and encourages them to value empathy, courage, and personal responsibility.
The Workshops
The follow on workshops for Year 5 and 6 pupils builds on the assembly to tackle the serious issue of knife crime through engaging drama activities and open discussion. It empowers children to understand the far-reaching impact that carrying knives can have, not just on themselves, but on their families and communities. Through games, role-play, and creative exercises, pupils explore the power of choices and how every decision has consequences.
Children are encouraged to reflect on their own experiences with peer pressure and risk, learning how to manage difficult situations with confidence and respect. By stepping into the shoes of characters like Gabriel, they practice having tough conversations with trusted adults and peers, discovering how seeking help can make all the difference. The workshop also demystifies the law around knife carrying, reinforcing that it’s illegal and dangerous, even if intended for “protection.”
To end, pupils work in small groups to create inspiring messages, whether songs, raps, or adverts that promote making safe choices and reaching out for support. With clear signposting to trusted resources like Childline and Fearless, the workshop leaves children better equipped to make powerful, positive choices in challenging moments.
A 45-minute assembly followed by 1 hour workshops for up to 4 classes of 30 pupils from upper KS2.
