The Assembly
Step inside the story tent and meet Anansi, the legendary trickster of African and Caribbean folklore! Part human, part spider, and always full of mischief, Anansi swings his silky webs across the world to outwit snakes, leopards, hornets, and even magical spirits, all in pursuit of an old wooden box that holds a powerful secret!
This interactive performance brings ancient storytelling to life with rhythm, song, dance, and plenty of pupil participation. Children are invited to help Anansi on his adventures, act out characters, and share what they’ve learned about friendship, trickery, and wisdom along the way. More than just a tale, Come An’ See Anansi celebrates the rich traditions of African and Caribbean cultures, explores the origins of stories themselves, and connects pupils with history through creativity, imagination, and fun.
The Workshops
This creative workshop builds on the Come An’ See Anansi performance and invites pupils to step even deeper into the magical world of Anansi. Through drama, movement, and group storytelling, children explore the origins and traditions of Anansi tales, discovering how these stories have been passed down through generations to inspire imagination, celebrate culture, and teach important life lessons.
Pupils work together to recall the story they experienced in the assembly, contribute their own ideas to the tale, and experiment with drama techniques such as role-play, tableaux, and hot seating. They then collaborate to bring a brand-new Anansi adventure to life, before joining in with a storyteller-led performance that highlights the morals and values within these traditional tales.
By the end of the session, children will have a deeper understanding of Anansi’s character, his importance in African and Caribbean storytelling, and the role stories play in sharing history, culture, and community. They will also develop their confidence as storytellers, building skills in imagination, teamwork, and creative expression.
Schools have previously booked Come An’ See Anansi for Book Weeks, Black History Month, Enrichment days, World Book Day celebrations and end of term treats.
This is a whole school theatre and storytelling based assembly programme, followed by optional hour-long drama workshops for each class group from KS1 & KS2.
