Bigfoot’s ‘Anti Racism’ workshop has been specially researched and designed by our Senior Educator Adrian Benn in order to provide KS2 pupils with a safe forum to explore how important it is for us all to be more than just “not racist”.
Writer Audre Lorde’s statement “it is not our differences that divide us; it is our inability to recognise, accept, and celebrate those differences”, underpins the workshop by giving pupils the opportunity to recognise the role they have to play in changing society through education, intention and courage.
The Anti-Racism workshop is an engaging and thought-provoking session that uses drama and discussion to help pupils explore what racism is, why it exists, and how to actively challenge it. Through interactive activities such as role-play, improvisation, tableaux, and group discussions, children learn about key concepts including race as a social construct, privilege, equity vs equality, and the impact of both overt racism and subtle microaggressions. The session encourages pupils to critically examine stereotypes, explore real-world examples of racial inequality, and discuss the importance of becoming anti-racist allies who actively work to create positive change. Pupils also take part in creative activities such as designing anti-racism slogans and visualising “anti-racist actions” through tableaux, helping them to connect their learning to practical, everyday behaviour.
By the end of the workshop, pupils will be able to clearly define racism and identify how it affects individuals and communities. They will have learned at least three practical anti-racism tools, such as how to challenge discriminatory language, the importance of education and empathy, and how to seek help from trusted adults. The workshop aims to empower young people with the confidence and understanding to recognise and respond to racism, while reinforcing the values of respect, fairness, and courage. Ultimately, it inspires pupils to ask themselves how they can contribute to building a more inclusive and equitable society.
We can deliver 1-hour workshops to 5 selected classes of 30 children over one day.
KS1 workshops are based on diversity and celebrating differences.
Schools can also opt to receive an end of day 90 minute teacher twilight session.
