This workshop is all about celebrating the wealth of talent that exists within Britain due to the many black people who have contributed, and continue to contribute, to our society. From sportspeople to scientists, activists to musicians, politicians to writers, we’re excited to introduce students to a whole bunch of incredible Black British people. So get ready to discover, dance, laugh and learn about how these inspiring individuals have helped shape the world in which we live.
Black & British: A Bigfoot Workshop Celebration
This dynamic, drama-based workshop celebrates the contributions of Black British figures past and present, focusing on five inspiring individuals: Marcus Rashford, Malorie Blackman, Lenny Henry, Maggie Aderin-Pocock, and the Kanneh-Mason family. Led by a Bigfoot Arts Educator, students explore their stories through interactive games, storytelling, role-play, still image, and group reflection.
From discovering mystery items in “feely bags” and performing character tableaux, to matching quotes and creating a collaborative memory relay, pupils learn about the diverse roles Black people have played, and continue to play, in shaping Britain. The session aims to spark pride, promote empathy, and empower young people to celebrate multiculturalism, challenge stereotypes, and take an active role in recognising overlooked stories in British history. By the end, pupils will be able to identify at least one Black British figure they didn’t know before and feel inspired to keep learning beyond the session.
Each hour-long workshop caters for a class group of 30 children from KS1 & KS2 pupils.
