Little Steps – Moving On to KS1 Drama Workshop
Helping children embrace change with confidence, creativity, and care
Bigfoot’s Little Steps – Moving On workshop gently supports younger pupils as they prepare to move from KS1 to KS2 or from Infant to Junior School. Blending storytelling, discussion, and drama, this heart warming and interactive session helps children explore their feelings about chang, from excitement to uncertainty, and discover that they’re not alone in how they feel.
The workshop begins with the engaging Moving On Story, where the facilitator shares their own childhood experience of starting Year 3. Through expressive storytelling, music, and audience participation, children join in with facial expressions, sounds, and actions to explore the mixed emotions of transition. They reflect on what it’s like to leave behind familiar teachers and friends while looking forward to new experiences, routines, and opportunities.
Next, fun and inclusive drama games such as Fruit Salad: What Are the Feelings? and Step Into the Circle encourage pupils to identify and share their own emotions about moving schools. These playful activities help normalise worries, build empathy, and strengthen class connections.
Working together in small groups, pupils then use movement and tableaux (frozen pictures) to bring to life common worries about moving up, from new teachers to bigger playgrounds, before discovering the positives and finding creative solutions. Through imagination and teamwork, they learn that challenges can often be turned into exciting opportunities for growth.
To finish, the group collaborates on a colourful class display of Top Tips for Transition — A collection of promises, advice, and supportive messages to remind one another that they are capable, prepared, and never alone as they take their next step.
By the end of Little Steps – Moving On, children leave feeling reassured, proud, and ready for the adventure ahead, equipped with the confidence, understanding, and positivity they need to embrace change with a smile.
Schools can book this programme at any time of the year, but are mostly booked during Summer Term 2.
Each 45-minute workshop caters for a class group of 30 children.
