Now That’s What I Call Poetry

Now That’s What I Call Poetry! – KS1 & KS2 Workshops
Inspired by Michael Rosen and Grace Nichols

Bigfoot’s Now That’s What I Call Poetry! workshops bring words to life in a joyful celebration of rhythm, rhyme and imagination. Designed to show pupils that poetry is for everyone, these sessions transform the classroom into a creative space where language is playful, performance is encouraged, and every child discovers the power of their own voice.

For KS1, children dive into Michael Rosen’s wonderfully mischievous poem Don’t, exploring rhyme, repetition and rhythm through laughter, movement and sound. From jump-and-duck rhyming games to group performances of their very own “Don’t” poem, pupils learn that words can dance, bounce and sing. The focus is on fun, teamwork and confidence-building, proving that poetry isn’t something to be feared, it’s something to be enjoyed!

For KS2, pupils take inspiration from Grace Nichols’ Sun Is Laughing, exploring imagery and metaphor through creative movement and performance. Working in small groups, they personify the sun, moon, stars and earth, imagining what their celestial characters might say and do throughout the day. Guided by the facilitator, they shape their ideas into original poems, learning that poetry is about expression and feeling, not perfect spelling or rules.

Both workshops encourage inclusivity, creativity and confidence. Whether pupils are acting out a poem, clapping along to its rhythm, or sharing their verses aloud, they discover that poetry is not just something to study, it’s something to experience. By the end, every child will have written, performed and celebrated their own words, leaving the session inspired, proud and full of poetic possibility.

Poetry really is fun and Bigfoot is here to prove it!
