Time To Carnival!

Step into a vibrant, interactive celebration of Black culture, identity and history with Time To Carnival, a dynamic two-hander performance workshop for KS1 and KS2 pupils.

Set against the rhythmic backdrop of Notting Hill Carnival and guided by the magical character Spirit and a lively Bigfoot educator companion, this immersive theatre experience uses storytelling, drama, music and movement to honour Black British heroes past, present and future.

As pupils arrive in carnival-inspired costume, they’re welcomed into a colourful world of ribbons, music, and anticipation. From the moment Spirit makes their dazzling entrance to the beat of calypso and soca, the room comes alive with joy, rhythm and storytelling. Children explore the history of the Notting Hill Carnival and the legacy of Claudia Jones, the visionary activist who created the first Caribbean carnival in the UK as an act of resistance and unity.

Through freeze frames, character role-play, and whole-group discussion, pupils dive into the story of the Windrush Generation, exploring identity, migration, and celebration. They reimagine key moments in Black British history, from boarding the Empire Windrush to dancing in the streets of 1966 London with Russell Henderson’s steel band.

The workshop also introduces the powerful concept of Sankofa, learning from the past to shape the future through engaging storytelling and symbolic carnival traditions like “playing mas.” Pupils are invited to “join a band” and finish with a joyful, high-energy Carnival parade, waving ribbon sticks and embodying the spirit of unity, pride, and empowerment.

Carnival of Heroes leaves pupils informed, inspired, and uplifted, ready to celebrate cultural heritage with creativity, compassion and confidence.

A Bigfoot Arts Education Big Experience is a hybrid of a theatrical spectacle and interactive drama based workshop which involves carefully curated ‘safe’ games, and exercises that are created for larger groups.

These hour-long Big Experiences can cater for up to 120 children (4 classes) in each session. We can deliver up to four experiences over the course of a day for KS1 & KS2 pupils. Book this amazing experience for Black History Month, Multi-Cultural and Diversity Weeks and any whole school feel good celebration!
