Anti-Racism

Bigfoot’s ‘Anti Racism’ workshop for Secondary schools has been specially researched and designed by our Senior Educator Adrian Benn in order to provide pupils with a safe forum to explore how important it is for us all to be more than just “not racist”.

Writer Audre Lorde’s statement “it is not our differences that divide us; it is our inability to recognise, accept, and celebrate those differences”, underpins the workshop by giving students the opportunity to recognise the role they have to play in changing society through education, intention and courage.

The KS3 Anti-Racism workshop is an interactive and thought-provoking session designed to deepen students’ understanding of racism, its historical roots, and its modern-day manifestations. Through open discussion, practical exercises, and creative drama activities such as group tableaux, the workshop explores key concepts including the social construct of race, the different forms of racism (personal, interpersonal, institutional, and structural), and the power dynamics of privilege and inequality. Students are encouraged to critically examine stereotypes, implicit bias, and microaggressions, with practical examples and activities such as the “Privilege & Power” game, and reflective group exercises helping to highlight how societal structures and unconscious assumptions affect everyday interactions.

By the end of the session, students will have developed tools to confidently challenge racism, both in themselves and others, and to take proactive steps as anti-racist allies. The workshop’s core learning outcomes include recognising and defining racism, understanding its impact on individuals and communities, and identifying at least three practical anti-racism strategies such as allyship, education, and promoting equity over equality. It also aims to foster empathy, courage, and the ability to “make the invisible visible” by calmly addressing discriminatory language or behaviour. Ultimately, the workshop empowers students to use their voices and actions to contribute to a fairer and more inclusive society.

Workshops are 1 hour in length (Can be reduced to 50 minutes) and cater for a single class group at a time.

Schools can also opt to receive an end of day teacher twilight session where we explore Micro Aggressions and unconscious bias in further detail so that this can be used within their own ethos and teaching methods.
