The Big Consent Debate is a KS3 and KS4 debating workshop that explores what consent really means in everyday life. Designed as part of Bigfoot’s Big Debate programme, this 50-minute session gives Year 7 pupils the tools and language to understand, discuss and challenge common assumptions about consent. Sessions for Year 8 through to Year 12 are also available, with content tailored to the age group.
Consent is not just about saying yes or no. That is the big statement at the heart of this workshop, and it is one that pupils are invited to test, argue and revisit throughout the session. Using a combination of real-world scenarios, survey evidence and structured debate, pupils develop a more nuanced understanding of what free and informed agreement actually looks like in practice.
The session introduces the FRIES framework (Freely given, Reversible, Informed, Enthusiastic, Specific) and explores questions around freedom, capacity and power. Our Year 7 programme deliberately approaches consent in a wider relational context. For Year 8 and above, the workshop extends into more complex territory, including sexual consent, in line with the DfE statutory RSE guidance for secondary schools.
