We’re incredibly proud to share that one of the stop-motion animation films Bigfoot Wales created with Whitchurch Primary School has been recognised as a finalist in the Climate Challenge Cymru 2026 competition, in the Protect and Restore Nature category.
The competition, organised through Eco-Schools Wales, celebrates inspiring environmental projects from schools across Wales, showcasing the fantastic work young people are doing to tackle climate change and protect the natural world.
The project was delivered over three days, with three Year 3 classes, each spending a full day creating their section of the film. The children began by taking part in an interactive presentation exploring the fundamentals of stop-motion animation before bringing their pre-planned storyboards and scripts to life.
Working in small teams, the pupils designed and made all of the clay characters, backgrounds, props and sets themselves, before animating their scenes frame by frame. They then recorded professional-quality voice-overs to complete the finished film, resulting in a wonderful collaborative animation that showcased both their creativity and their passion for protecting nature.
One of the highlights of the project is Whitchurch Primary School’s annual Animation Oscar Ceremony, where the completed films are premiered on the big screen for friends and families. It’s a wonderful celebration of the children’s hard work and achievements, allowing every pupil to showcase their creativity and share their important environmental message with the wider school community.
This year’s Oscar Ceremony was another huge success, with parents and families blown away by the quality of the animations. One viewer, Charlotte Keenan, commented:
“This is just brilliant — beautiful and completely heart-wrenching all at once. Those sweet little voices really got me. They say young voices reach where others can’t… and this proves it. It needs to go viral 💚”
School staff also attended the Climate Challenge Cymru 2026 Awards Ceremony this week to celebrate the project’s success. Being recognised as a finalist for the second year running is a fantastic achievement and a real testament to the creativity, teamwork and dedication of the pupils and staff involved.
Our Stop-Motion Animation Workshops are available to schools all year round and consistently receive 100% outstanding feedback from teachers. As well as producing an amazing film to share with the whole school community, pupils develop a wide range of valuable lifelong skills, including self-confidence, digital competence, ICT skills, creativity, imagination, collaboration, communication, problem-solving, perseverance and inquisitive thinking. The workshops also support the Digital Competence Framework (DCF), helping children develop essential digital skills through a fun, hands-on and creative learning experience. Teachers take part alongside the pupils, learning the animation techniques themselves so they can continue to develop these skills back in the classroom, ensuring a lasting legacy long after the workshop has finished.
