The Assembly
This powerful assembly introduces pupils to the extraordinary journey of Little Amal, a 12-foot puppet of a ten-year-old Syrian refugee who has become a global symbol of hope. Through film, storytelling, and interactive activities, children learn about Amal’s 9,000-mile walk across borders in search of safety, as well as the real experiences of refugee children like her.
Pupils are invited to become World Friendship Ambassadors, reflecting on the challenges faced by those forced to leave their homes and exploring how simple acts of kindness such a smile, a game, a welcome can make a big difference. By meeting characters like Sayed, a young refugee boy, and hearing his story through the eyes of a friend, children are encouraged to develop empathy, compassion, and a deeper understanding of the global refugee crisis.
More than just an assembly, Think Simple, Act BIG! inspires pupils to celebrate diversity, stand up for fairness, and recognise the positive contributions refugees bring to communities everywhere.
The Workshops
This practical drama workshop gives pupils the chance to step further into the experiences of refugee children like Little Amal and Sayed, helping them to connect with their stories on a deeper level. Through role-play, movement, still image, and ensemble activities, pupils explore why people are forced to leave their homes, what it feels like to start again in an unfamiliar place, and how simple acts of kindness can make all the difference in helping someone feel safe and welcome.
Using imaginative exercises such as “Step into the Circle,” “Happiness Machine,” and “My Favourite Things,” children reflect on their own lives and the things they value, while developing empathy for those who have been displaced. By mapping their own diverse family roots and celebrating the unique cultures represented in the classroom, pupils also gain an appreciation of how refugees enrich our communities.
By the end of the session, pupils will be able to identify causes of displacement, suggest simple ways to support and welcome refugees, and recognise the importance of diversity. They will also build drama skills, confidence, and teamwork while engaging with one of the most urgent humanitarian issues of our time.
Schools can book Think Simple Act Big to celebrate Refugee Week, Multi-Cultural weeks or to support the PSHE curriculum for Equality, Diversity & Inclusion.
This is a whole school assembly programme, followed by hour-long drama workshops for each class group of 30 pupils from KS1 & KS2.
