On Tuesday our CEO Karl had the privilege to visit Hope 93 Gallery – London’s only black owned gallery- to see and experience the work of celebrated documentary filmmaker and photographer Misan Harriman

Hope 93 is an art gallery, advisory, and events space that opened its doors a year ago in October 2024. Founded by Aki Abiola, the idea for the gallery came after he spent five years on the Tate’s acquisition committee, where he advised the group on which underrepresented African artists to put on display. “I really didn’t like the lack of inclusivity in the art world,” he said. “I wanted to do something different – with people from all backgrounds.”

Misan Harriman’s landmark photographic exhibition, ‘The Purpose of Light’, comes at a time where human solidarity is needed more than ever. Featuring 110 unique and powerful photographs taken over 7 years, this exhibition is a call for togetherness. Exhibited are photographs that span continents and causes, from Black Lives Matter marches in London and Minneapolis, to vigils for the victims of Grenfell Tower, and most recently, the massive global movement in response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. These images are not just moments frozen in time, they are acts of witness, of remembrance, and of resistance.

We will be showcasing some of Misans’ iconic photographs in our KS2 drama workshop programme ‘Protest; If Not Now, Then When?’, which empowers children to find their own voice in peaceful protest and learn about important figures from history who paved the way for civil liberties.

It’s also worth pointing out that entry is FREE! So it’s definitely worth a visit!
