Led by Bigfoot Senior Educator Adrian Benn, this 90-minute online CPD session creates a safe, supportive space to explore what it really means to move beyond simply being “not racist” and instead become actively anti-racist in our work and everyday lives.
Together we will explore:
• Why intent and impact both matter
• Key terminology around racism and anti-racism
• How microaggressions and unconscious bias affect young people
• How racist beliefs can form and how to challenge them
• How we can all work towards greater equity and inclusion
This session is rooted in Audre Lorde’s powerful words:
“It is not our differences that divide us; it is our inability to recognise, accept, and celebrate those differences.”

The group exercise where everyone closed their eyes and imagined characters in a story really highlighted how much unconscious bias we all have.
I found the segment where we went through the list of key figures to be useful as I was reminded of the impact key figures have made and why their impact was significant. I also liked the exercises around recognising unconscious bias as it brought awareness to the ways in which we are conditioned to have biases.
This felt like such a safe and exploratory space to address what can be an inflammatory topic. To delve into the language and history of race was really interesting, and good to see where some of our pre-conceived ideas of race come from. Understanding ideas such as the Wheel of Power were very thought provoking.
