This 35-minute classroom film resource brings the story of the Windrush Generation to life for KS1 and KS2 pupils through drama, song and first-person storytelling. Filmed by Bigfoot Arts Education and starring BAFTA Award winning actress Dani Moseley, the film follows Grace and her son Clinton as they board the Empire Windrush in Jamaica and begin a three-week voyage to a new life in post-war Britain.
Grace and Clinton stand on the harbour in Jamaica in the summer of 1948, tickets in hand, watching nearly 500 passengers prepare to board the Empire Windrush. As the ship sets sail, children join in a familiar song to comfort Clinton as he misses his grandmother, learn about the Windrush Generation’s hopes and fears, and hear first-hand about the realities of beginning a new life in Britain. Along the way they meet real historical figures including Sam King, Claudia Jones and Lord Kitchener, discovering how those first arrivals shaped the multicultural Britain we know today. The journey ends at Tilbury Docks on the 22nd of June 1948, as Grace and Clinton step ashore to meet Clinton’s father.
A Brilliant classroom resource for our children, who were all thoroughly engaged. This isn’t your typical dry resource, but young actors telling us an important story and at the same time delivering fun activities in between! Well worth the investment, and we get to keep it too, and use it whenever we need it! PS The resource pack also adds great added value!, so thank you – Eaton Primary, Norfolk
