Come and be part of the welcoming party as passengers disembark the Empire Windrush troopship in Tilbury, Essex. Meet those who made the journey from the Caribbean in 1948 and hear the real stories of those who came to Britain to start a new life; who were they? Where did they live? What did they achieve? And, most importantly, how can this pivotal period in history teach us lessons about embracing multicultural Britain today.
This immersive performance and drama-based workshop invites KS1 and KS2 pupils to explore the legacy of the Windrush Generation through storytelling, role-play, music and historical discovery. Led by two engaging characters – Sam (a curious learner) and Legacy (an other-worldly guardian of memory)
The session begins with the arrival of a mysterious postcard, sparking a quest to uncover the stories, experiences, and contributions of the Windrush Generation. Through active learning and collective problem-solving, pupils embark on an interactive journey from the Caribbean to Britain, meeting real-life figures like Sam King and Evelyn Wauchope, exploring themes of migration, community, resilience, and celebration.
Using drama games, historical props, music, and group discussions, children will develop empathy, historical understanding and oracy skills. Activities include “discovery bag” exploration, freeze frames, true-or-false quizzes, and emotion tableaux, all culminating in the symbolic collection of five ‘Legacy Items’, each representing a key aspect of the Windrush story.
Pupils leave the workshop not only more informed about Black British history, but empowered as “Legacy Protectors” with a deeper appreciation for inclusion, diversity, and the power of remembrance.
These hour-long Big Experiences can cater for up to 120 children (4 classes) in each session. We can deliver up to 4 experiences over a day.
